La dodicesima notte è l’ultima commedia giocosa – a tratti autenticamente farsesca – scritta da Shakespeare prima del periodo delle grandi tragedie e delle commedie “nere”. Elegante, piena di grazia e levità, trascina lo spettatore nella sua atmosfera magica e incantata, in un mondo in cui i contrasti più feroci si compongono spesso in pochi attimi. Eppure la noia di Orsino, il lutto di Olivia, la ventata di follia che si respira in tutta la pièce, le canzoni del Buffone – due in particolare, che sono in realtà dei canti funebri, dei requiem – anticipano la feroce fustigazione dei vizi umani che caratterizza l’evoluzione poetica shakespeariana, in cui serpeggia persistente il presagio di un mondo sconvolto e oscuro e l’approssimarsi di “un’età dell’ansia”. Il sogno è finito e l’uomo deve tornare a fare i conti con la bufera della realtà.
