Tre talentuosi orsi bianchi sono gli inusitati protagonisti di un romanzo che racconta le loro travagliate esistenze attraversando un secolo di storia. Sua figlia Tosca, nata in Canada, si trasferisce nella Germania orientale, dove dà spettacolo come provetta ballerina di tango nei circhi. La sua storia ci giunge attraverso la voce dell’addestratrice Barbara, con cui ha stabilito un legame viscerale che dai sogni arriva fino al palco. Infine Knut, il figlio che Tosca abbandona per seguire la sua vena artistica, si ritrova affidato a un altro mammifero, il custode dello zoo di Berlino, e cresce assediato da giornalisti e visitatori, diventando, suo malgrado, il simbolo delle ansie per il destino del pianeta. Orsi polari che non hanno mai messo piede al Polo Nord, cresciuti in simbiosi con chi li ha irrimediabilmente snaturati, Knut, la madre e la nonna si aggrappano al ricordo per inseguire la propria identità e osservano gli umani con sguardo stranito e insieme profondamente curioso, scovando una comune radice animale che annulla ogni barriera linguistica, politica o sociale.
