Tom Baxter è tra i migliori chirurghi ortopedici di Seattle. Ma gli ultimi tempi sono stati duri per lui e la sua famiglia: la moglie è morta da un anno e i figli, Owen e Olivia, faticano a superare il trauma e ad accettare la giovane Heather, con cui Tom si è appena risposato.
Per cercare un po’ di serenità, Tom decide di trasformare un convegno di medici a Melbourne in un viaggio di famiglia e quando in Australia i ragazzi trovano finalmente un’attività che li esalta come vedere da vicino i koala, Tom acconsente. Due abitanti del posto incontrati per caso invitano i Baxter a una breve gita a Dutch Island, un piccolo isolotto incontaminato vicino alla costa, abitato solo dalla grande famiglia O’Neill. Già sull’imbarcazione che li porta all’isola, l’eccitante sensazione di trovarsi in un luogo esclusivo, in cui poter assaporare la vera natura selvaggia australiana, si fa sempre più forte... Soprattutto quando, per la loro sicurezza, i due abitanti del posto dettano regole ferree: non avvicinarsi alla fattoria, unica costruzione presente oltre a una prigione dismessa, non addentrarsi nella vegetazione e rivedersi al molo entro quarantacinque minuti. Ma i Baxter non torneranno mai più al molo. Perché dopo un fatale errore dettato dalla distrazione, l’isola diventa una prigione e ogni angolo nasconde un possibile agguato letale. Una trappola che li costringerà a scegliere cosa, e soprattutto chi, sacrificare pur di sopravvivere.
