Un italiano su mille: era più o meno questa la proporzione di ebrei nella popolazione del nostro paese quanto nel 1938 entrarono in vigore le leggi razziali, con le quali lo stato fascista si dichiarava ufficialmente antisemita e dava inizio alla vergognosa persecuzione razzista. Fino a quel momento, tuttavia, ebrei e fascisti avevano convissuto, in un singolare miscuglio di benevolenza e tradimento, persecuzione e aiuto.

Gli Schönheit di Ferrara vennero spediti a Buchenwald e Ravensbrück dai fascisti italiani e dai nazisti tedeschi.
Uno su mille, pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1991, è il frutto di una paziente ricostruzione storica, ma anche di una serie di conversazioni con diversi protagonisti e testimoni di quegli eventi terribili. Documentato meticolosamente ma appassionante come un romanzo, Uno su mille è diventato un classico, un libro importante. Ancora più prezioso oggi, quando i dibattiti sul fascismo si sono fatti molto semplicistici e caricaturali. Come scrive Alexander Stille, «fa paura pensare al giorno in cui non ci saranno testimoni diretti di quel periodo tragico… Non so immaginare il giorno in cui non ci sarà più nessuno in grado di dire: «mi dispiace, non è stato così, io c’ero».

Walking around Rome you occasionally notice small brass squares embedded in the sidewalk, each one engraved with the name of an Italian Jew who was sent to Auschwitz. In some cases entire families including babies were deported and killed. This story is horrifying but fairly well-known. Benevolence
