Arthur Alter, professore precario di ingegneria applicata in un’oscura università del Midwest, ha disperatamente bisogno di una buona idea per uscire dai guai. Eppure fino a qualche anno fa tutto sembrava andare a gonfie vele. Una moglie innamorata, Francine; due figli, Ethan e Maggie, ben inseriti nella vita del campus, e una giovane amante sua collega. Ma la morte di Francine, e soprattutto la sua decisione di diseredare in extremis il marito fedifrago, hanno fatto crollare tutto. Ora Arthur non riesce più nemmeno a pagare il mutuo e quindi a iniziare una nuova vita di coppia, e i figli, con i soldi della madre, terminati gli studi vivono a New York, faticando parecchio a trovare il proprio posto nel mondo. Ethan, in preda a crisi d’ansia ed eternamente insoddisfatto della sua vita sentimentale, quasi non esce di casa e nasconde la sua passione per l’alcol dietro l’hobby dei microbirrifici di tendenza; Maggie si dedica in maniera ossessiva al volontariato, ostenta disprezzo per il denaro ma non sa comunque separarsene. Entrambi vengono colti di sorpresa dall’invito del padre per un weekend di riconciliazione, che scoperchierà una serie di conflitti irrisolti fino a trasformarsi in una vera e propria resa dei conti. In un originale romanzo d’esordio, pieno di ironia ma anche di affettuosa partecipazione ai destini dei suoi personaggi, Andrew Ridker racconta una famiglia imperfetta e proprio per questo irresistibile, sullo sfondo dell’America contemporanea e dell’apparente contraddizione tra dovere morale e ricerca del benessere. Un dilemma che rende così difficile, oggi, potersi definire davvero «altruisti».

Ridker is a good writer and this is a good, but not great, debut. He writes from the perspectives of 4 characters and excels at the son and flounders with the daughter (who has a scene that displays such a lack of self-awareness that she comes across as a 7 year old and it's not very believable). Deeply hilarious and deeply moving. I couldn't put it down (finished it at about 4:30am one morning because after starting to read 6 hours earlier, I couldn't stop myself til I was done). Very likely the best novel I've read in the last few years.
