Dopo l'imponente affresco storico di "Guerra e pace" - "libro sul passato", per definizione dello stesso autore - Lev Tolstoj si dedica finalmente alla Russia a lui coeva e a un "romanzo di vita contemporanea". Anna Karenina, appunto. Dodici sono le redazioni attraverso le quali lo scrittore trasforma la sfrontata, eccessiva Tat'jana (che muore affogata, ma con un'annotazione a margine: treno?) nella sensuale ma ancora rozza Nanà e - finalmente, dalla quarta variante - in Anna Arkad'evna Karenina, cesellandone via via quella disperata profondità emotiva che fece scrivere a Sergej Dovlatov: "La peggiore sciagura della mia vita? La morte di Anna Karenina". Il successo di pubblico fu subito straordinario. I lettori attesero con trepidazione le sette parti che la rivista "Russkij vestnik" ("Il messaggero russo") pubblicò dal 1875 al 1877 (l'ottava, politicamente sdrucciola, Tolstoj dovette farla uscire a proprie spese), così come l'agognato volume nel 1878. Accolto dalla critica come un "romanzo frivolo dell'alta società" e annunciato nel 1885 in traduzione italiana dalla "Gazzetta di Torino" con la certezza che avrebbe suscitato "profonda, incancellabile impressione sull'animo dei lettori e specialmente su quello delle lettrici", nel corso dei decenni la scelta di Anna Karenina, la sua sfida al beau monde e il suo drammatico suicidio preparato dalla meschinità, dal decoro, dall'ordito di convenzioni ben inamidate, sono stati oggetto di interpretazioni di ogni sorta.
