Willa Drake ha speso la vita nel tentativo di essere una donna affidabile, ragionevole, accomodante. L’esatto contrario di quella madre volubile, dal carattere impetuoso, che con i suoi umori violenti ha turbato la serenità della sua infanzia. Per questo ha acconsentito a un matrimonio forse precipitoso, finendo per rinunciare alle sue aspirazioni accademiche; per questo ha cercato di essere sempre comprensiva con i figli e di perdonare al marito la colpa più imperdonabile, quella di averla lasciata vedova. Troppo spesso, insomma, Willa ha permesso a qualcun altro di scegliere al suo posto. Fino a un pomeriggio di metà luglio come tanti, in cui una telefonata la sorprende mentre sta riordinando le sue fasce per capelli. Una telefonata da Baltimora, dove vive il suo figlio maggiore. Non è lui a cercarla: è una donna sconosciuta, che però è convinta di sapere molto di lei e, soprattutto, di avere urgente bisogno del suo aiuto. Senza dissipare l'equivoco, Willa decide impulsivamente di partire, nonostante la perplessità del secondo marito, che vorrebbe trattenerla. Willa si troverà a badare a una bambina di nove anni che non è sua nipote, ma un po' lo diventerà; a portare a spasso un cane che da subito le obbedisce; a inserirsi nelle dinamiche di una comunità che non è la sua, ma forse potrebbe esserlo. Perché forse per Willa è arrivato il momento di aprirsi a nuovi legami, di scegliere stavolta la propria famiglia, per ricominciare.
