L'"Antigone" andò in scena nel 442 a.C., l'anno precedente all'elezione del poeta a stratego, come collega di Pericle (441-440 a.C.). La tradizione testimonierebbe che Sofocle sia stato onorato della strategia a Samo in seguito alla fama riportata nella rappresentazione di questo dramma. La notizia, nella sua verosimiglianza, dimostra l'impatto sul pubblico che l'opera ebbe da subito, nonostante - e forse proprio perché - l'argomento ci risulti essere frutto dell'invenzione del poeta tragico ateniese. Gli epigoni del mito dei Labdacidi, infatti, erano già stati trattati da Eschilo nei "Sette a Tebe", ma solo Sofocle pone al centro del testo l'azione di Antigone. Anzi, egli costruisce il dramma proprio intorno all'insanabile conflitto tra l'eroina e il sovrano Creonte sulla liceità di attribuire la stessa dignità di sepoltura a chi abbia combattuto a favore (Eteocle) e a chi contro (il fratello Polinice) alla propria città. This was a reread for me. The first time I read this play was in my sophomore year or high school and I remember liking it but I LOVED it this time around. It's fabulous and now I want to read the rest of the Theban plays.
