Straordinario réportage sulle abitudini di una certa società imperiale brulicante di arricchiti, matrone mondane e lussuriose, poetastri e parassiti, il Satiricon (probabilmente databile al sec. I d.C.) si inserisce nella tradizione della satira menippea e del romanzo greco d’amore e d’avventura. Narra le peripezie di due giovani, Encolpio e Ascilto, che si contendono i favori di un efebo incostante, Gitone. Al terzetto, che vaga di città in città fra avventure erotiche e furfanterie, si aggiunge poi Eumolpo, vecchio ribaldo, ma poeta e fine critico. Testo caleidoscopico, che riesce a dare originalità e carattere a ciascun personaggio, il Satiricon si avvicina al romanzo picaresco per il carattere aperto della narrazione, mentre per la struttura parodistica è stato paragonato al Don Chisciotte.
