Per essere riconosciuto dai tebani come un dio, Dioniso instilla una scintilla di follia e di furore nelle donne della città, che si ritirano sul Citerone a celebrare riti in suo onore. Tragedia enigmatica e disorientante, scritta da Euripide negli ultimi anni di vita, nelle "Baccanti" si mescolano finzione e verità, gioco ed ebbrezza e nell'alchimia del testo il terribile confina sempre con il grottesco. Ma le "Baccanti" sono innanzitutto una crudele rappresentazione della fragilità dell'umano, posta sotto il segno inquietante di Dioniso, «il più terribile e il più dolce tra gli dei». E il mondo stabile degli oggetti familiari, delle figure rassicuranti vacilla per divenire un gioco di fantasmagorie in cui l'illusorio, l'impossibile, l'assurdo si fanno realtà.
