Nel 2114 il mondo è cambiato a causa di un disastro ecologico senza precedenti e della conseguente crisi energetica. Parte dell'Asia è ghiacciata, il Circolo polare artico è divenuto fertile e l'America del Nord è quasi del tutto disabitata e desertica. Quando alcuni picchi radioattivi inspiegabili impensieriscono l'Europa, un piccolo gruppo di esploratori viene inviato a bordo del piroscafo Apollo alla ricerca delle cause dell'anomalia. La missione è composta da discendenti degli americani espatriati più di cento anni prima: ognuno si sente legato in qualche modo alla terra natìa dei propri avi, ognuno ha un secondo fine per essere lì. Costretti a viaggiare da costa a costa, scopriranno le tracce di un mondo ormai scomparso, incontreranno "nativi" che vivono in modo primitivo, prede di una cultura ormai disintegrata. I segnali indicano che da qualche parte al di là delle distese desertiche di Manhattan si annida un'allettante, ma pericoloso, mistero e i viaggiatori dell'Apollo abbandoneranno la loro missione scientifica alla ricerca di un nuovo "sogno americano".
