Leonora Eyre è una donna che ha fatto della moderazione la sua principale virtù: graziosa ma non bella, elegante ma non vistosa, intelligente ma non intellettuale, benestante ma non ricca. E con una cerchia di pochi, fidati amici, in cui a un tratto entrano Humphrey, un affascinante antiquario, e suo nipote James. I did not like Leonora Eyre, the 50-year-old central character, at all. She was unmarried.... probably good reason for that. "Yes, I suppose one feels that life is only tolerable if one takes a romantic view of it." I really enjoyed this.
