Blanche è un'ingenua ragazza madre che, lasciatasi alle spalle la provincia con le sue maldicenze, è venuta a New York convinta che il luccicante mondo dell'America urbana del secondo dopoguerra possa offrire a lei e a Bunny, la sua bambina, un futuro migliore. Per poter lavorare, ha affidato a malincuore la figlia a un asilo, ma quando il primo giorno va a riprenderla, Bunny non c'è, è scomparsa. E nessuno sa nulla di lei. Davanti all'ansia crescente di Blanche, la direttrice della scuola e la polizia reagiscono con compassione e al tempo stesso con diffidenza mentre si insinua il sospetto che Bunny non sia altro che il parto di una fantasia malata. Per la giovane donna è una discesa negli inferi di una metropoli che si rivela dura e scostante e scambia la sua disperazione per il linguaggio della follia. Ma sotto la sua apparente fragilità ed emotività si nasconde, senza che lei stessa ne sia cosciente, il temperamento di una leonessa pronta a tutto pur di ritrovare la sua creatura. E almeno il lettore starà dalla sua parte? Pubblicato nel 1957, questo classico thriller psicologico ha ispirato l'omonimo cult movie diretto nel 1965 da Otto Preminger con Carol Linley nel ruolo di Blanche, Laurence Olivier e il commediografo Noël Coward.
