Dalla suggestione di questo silenzio angosciante Rachel Carson trasse il titolo del suo libro che, nato dall'osservazione attenta dei mutamenti rilevati nella fauna e nella flora del New England tra gli anni quaranta e cinquanta, per la prima volta metteva a fuoco il danno profondo che l'uso di insetticidi e sostanze chimiche comportava per la natura e per l'uomo stesso. Quelli che per diversi decenni erano stati salutati come la panacea di tutti i mali dell'agricoltura e dell'allevamento venivano smascherati come agenti di morte. Una presa di posizione rivoluzionaria, basata su una documentazione ricca e dettagliata, che costò all'autrice una vera e propria campagna di diffamazione da parte delle aziende produttrici di pesticidi e fertilizzanti. Ma il suo lavoro appassionato, improntato a uno scrupoloso rispetto della verità e a un grande coraggio intellettuale, si rivelò più forte degli attacchi. Dopo la pubblicazione di Primavera silenziosa, infatti, gli Stati Uniti misero al bando il DDT ed emanarono i primi provvedimenti legislativi a tutela dell'ambiente. È raro che un libro riesca a modificare il corso della storia, eppure questo saggio è riuscito a farlo, diventando, a distanza di sessant'anni, un classico della letteratura ambientalista. Allo stesso modo Rachel Carson può essere considerata la fondatrice del movimento globale per la difesa dell'ambiente e della salute. Oggi che come non mai sentiamo le conseguenze delle pratiche irresponsabili e pericolose denunciate dall'autrice, "Primavera silenziosa" rappresenta una lettura imprescindibile per chiunque sia interessato al futuro del pianeta - e degli esseri umani.
