Questo libro rappresenta un approccio originale e pionieristico all’economia. Da sempre appannaggio delle scienze sociali, della finanza e della psicologia, secondo César Hidalgo la crescita economica viene in effetti compresa meglio e più a fondo se la si guarda con gli strumenti della teoria dell’informazione, delle reti e della complessità. Per capire la crescita delle economie, e perché questa crescita avvenga solo in pochi luoghi e non ovunque, bisogna cioè innanzi tutto capire come cresce l’ordine nel mondo. Ma l’ordine sembra essere estraneo all’universo. Sappiamo che la termodinamica stabilisce che col tempo ordine e informazione tendono a scomparire: un vaso si rompe in pezzi diseguali, ma non succede mai che i cocci del vaso rotto si riassemblino spontaneamente a formare una struttura ordinata. Esistono tuttavia dei cicli termodinamici che assicurano un ordine locale, come la vita sulla Terra, ad esempio, ma anche come certe città rispetto ad altre: la Silicon Valley, Tokyo o Parigi. L’economia sembra crescere maggiormente proprio là dove persone, aziende e relazioni fanno il miglior uso possibile dell’informazione. Le economie, in pratica, vengono viste da César Hidalgo come reti informatiche distribuite, fatte di connessioni tra persone, di modo che il problema dello sviluppo economico diventa il problema di rendere questi computer diffusi più efficienti e potenti. Svelando i meccanismi della crescita dell’informazione in natura e nelle società, questo libro mette in comunicazione fisica ed economia in un modo mai tentato prima. L’evoluzione dell’ordine si situa così al crocevia tra la teoria dell’informazione, la fisica, la sociologia e l’economia, adombrando una nuova teoria economica che potrebbe indicarci non solo come fare di più, ma anche come farlo meglio.
