Parigi, 1891. All’angolo fra rue Montmartre e boulevard Poissonnière, una gelida mattina di novembre, viene ritrovato il cadavere di una ragazza strangolata. La giovane donna è vestita interamente di rosso e non indossa scarpe... Poche ore dopo, uno strano individuo entra nella libreria di Victor Legris in rue des Saints-Pères: sostiene di aver ritrovato un’elegante scarpetta rossa, nel cui interno qualcuno ha nascosto un biglietto da visita della libreria. A quella vista, Kenji Mori, il padre putativo di Victor, senza dir nulla, salta su una carrozza e fugge. È forse possibile che il distaccato, elegante e coltissimo giapponese sia in qualche modo collegato col delitto di Montmartre? Ovviamente Victor non esita neppure un istante e, accompagnato da Joseph, si getta a capofitto nell’indagine, setaccia Parigi in lungo e in largo alla ricerca di qualsiasi indizio... Ma la soluzione del mistero è molto più vicina di quanto lui non creda e scatenerà un autentico terremoto nella sua tranquilla libreria.

Affascinante l'atmosfera della Parigi di fine '800, all'inizio della belle époque , fra il Moulin Rouge e un café-chantant come lo Chat Noir.
