Inghilterra, 1906: Charles Rolls e Henry Royce sviluppano un rivoluzionario prototipo di automobile chiamato «Grey Ghost», lo Spettro grigio, che all’improvviso svanisce dalla fabbrica di Manchester. La polizia inglese accusa del furto uno dei dipendenti della Rolls-Royce, e quando l’auto viene ritrovata i due magnati la consegnano al visconte Jonathon Payton, come ringraziamento per il suo prezioso contributo alle indagini.
California, oggi: Albert, discendente dell’aristocratica famiglia Payton, è sul lastrico e, pur di non vendere tutte le proprietà per risanare le sue finanze, si rivolge a Sam e Remi Fargo nella speranza di ottenere un prestito, offrendo in garanzia proprio quella Grey Ghost che più di cento anni prima era stata rubata.
Sam e Remi accettano di aiutarlo, pur conoscendo bene la maledizione che grava sull’automobile, confermata dall’ennesimo furto che si compie proprio sotto i loro occhi. I Fargo scoprono che nelle indagini del 1906 era coinvolto anche un giovane detective americano di nome Isaac Bell, già sulle tracce di un gruppo di criminali specializzato in rapine ferroviarie ai danni di portavalori. Ed era stato proprio Bell a localizzare la Rolls-Royce. Oggi lo Spettro grigio potrebbe valere oltre cinquanta milioni di dollari. Ma potrebbe valere ancora di più un tesoro svanito nel nulla collegato all’automobile.
Sam e Remi scoprono rapidamente che non sono le uniche persone a cercare l’auto. Anche qualcun altro ha messo gli occhi sulla Rolls-Royce. Qualcuno che ha architettato un piano folle ed è pronto a tutto pur di attivarlo.

The Fargos have changed and become more aggressive. They are searching for and old Rolls-Royce in England. Jolly good story.
Tenth in the Sam and Remi Fargo action-adventure series and revolving around a young-but-retired couple of millionaires who enjoy doing good deeds, especially if it involves guns, escapes, and quick thinking. The story starts quickly and moves right along, the hook isn't as historical as some others, but fits well in the canon, and the crossover with the Bell series was fun but a bit troubling - dates are a but unclear in the present, but Isaac Bell's first adventure clearly takes place in 1906 as do the Leggi tutto
This was a bit of a disappointment. It wasn't up to the standard of some of Cussler's other books, and compared to something like 'The Oracle', it just wasn't great.
