Attraverso il racconto del «discreto e mansueto» Marlow, Conrad mostra gli esiti della rapacità belga nel continente africano incarnandola nella figura di Kurtz, spietato trafficante di avorio, sovrano «malato» di un regno che lui stesso sta distruggendo; figura la cui complessità non ha mai smesso di sedurre e oltrepassare i confini della pagina, che si tratti dell'ispirazione coppoliana per "Apocalypse Now" o della critica di Chinua Achebe alla latente visione colonialista di tutto il romanzo.
