È l'estate del 1978. I Krasnansky, una famiglia di ebrei lettoni, lasciano l'Unione Sovietica e arrivano a Roma per perfezionare i documenti di espatrio per il Nord America. Prigionieri nel limbo della burocrazia, Roma sarà per loro stazione intermedia e purgatorio: vi trascorreranno cinque mesi, da luglio a novembre, immersi nella variopinta sarabanda dell'emigrazione, tra le promesse e i pericoli del «mondo libero», tra nostalgia e alienazione, piccoli espedienti e amori proibiti.
Samuil, il patriarca, vecchio funzionario del Partito comunista e veterano dell'Armata rossa, che con la fedele moglie Emma ha lasciato a malincuore il paese cui ha dedicato tutto se stesso, si rifugia nel ricordo. Karl, il primogenito, in viaggio con la moglie Rosa e i due figli, pragmatico e impaziente di sfruttare tutte le opportunità offerte dall'Occidente, viene attratto dal mercato nero. Brilliant social novel, a pleasure to read. Excellent development of the characters and their motivations. Again I am liking a book about characters (some of them) that are not really admirable, or likable, but who deserve respect for their choices, their tenacity and strength nonetheless.
