Avvincente come un romanzo.» Mirella Appiotti, «TTL» Il primo e unico incontro tra Ludwig Wittgenstein e Karl Popper ebbe luogo il 25 ottobre 1946, nell’aula 3 della scala H del King’s College di Cambridge. La sala era affollata, Bertrand Russell sedette in prima fila, accanto al caminetto, ma furono in molti a restare in piedi per ascoltare il giovane professore giunto dalla London School of Economics affrontare il tema della serata: «Esistono problemi filosofici?». Non sarebbe stato un normale dibattito accademico: a un certo punto Wittgenstein, presidente del Moral Science Club che ospitava l’incontro, avrebbe addirittura minacciato il rivale con un attizzatoio. L’episodio entrò subito nella leggenda. David Edmonds e John Eidinow hanno ricostruito meticolosamente gli eventi di quel giorno fatale. Interrogando i testimoni e inseguendo varie piste, come in una indagine poliziesca, La lite di Cambridge riesce così a illuminare una pagina tra le più curiose della storia della filosofia, oltre che il pensiero e la personalità di due tra i suoi massimi protagonisti.

While it purports to be about an emphatic argument between Wittgenstein and Popper, the book actually uses that incident as a way into exploring the cultural background of both authors, especially the way they were both shaped by Vienna and the rise of the Nazis. There is some philosophy there, but
