Il quindicenne Mitja, per pagare un piccolo debito, chiede al padre un anticipo sulla paghetta, che gli viene negato. Pur di uscire dalla sgradita situazione, Mitja si rivolge al dissoluto e poco raccomandabile compagno di scuola Machin, il quale gli suggerisce di falsificare una cedola di pagamento, che, poco dopo, riescono a cambiare in un negozio di articoli di fotografia. Questo fatto, più simile a una bravata che a un atto criminoso, innescherà una terribile catena di eventi e di conseguenze sempre più gravi, che coinvolgeranno decine di altre persone, arrivando alla condanna di innocenti e finanche all'omicidio, in una perigliosa lotta tra peccato e redenzione. Tolstoj condanna in modo aspro e deciso il potere corruttivo del denaro, dipingendolo come funesto strumento per corrompere e degradare la società.

How such an event of a forgery has a dramatic effect on others and the subsequent chain of events is definitely thought provoking for any actions that we undertake.
