Un doppio gioco di gusto letterario e di simpatie ideali mosse Francesco Acri, famoso traduttore ottocentesco, a organizzare questa raccolta, che dell'intero corpus platonico ritaglia sia i dialoghi più noti sia quelli che è arduo trovare in altre edizioni: le ultime giornate di Socrate nell'"Apologia", il quadro festoso e malinconico del "Convito" amoroso, l'ispirata indagine sulla bellezza del "Fedro", l'ardua creazione del "Timeo" (Della natura) e l'esempio impietoso del "Parmenide" (Delle idee), sono accanto a "Eutifrone" (Del santo), "Critone" (Di quel che si deve fare), "Fedone" (Dell'immortalità dell'anima), "Assioco" (Della morte), "Jone" (Del furore poetico), "Menone" (Della virtù) e "Alcibiade" (Della natura dell'uomo). Nei "Dialoghi" la pratica dei Sofisti e di Socrate si unisce alla vocazione di Platone per il teatro e la loro forma è parte essenziale del pensiero che vi si incarna, in cui la parola si fa sentire come un avvicinamento approssimativo alla verità.
