Romanzo-romanzo, romanzo-saggio, "Gilles" è la narrazione in terza persona della vita di un intellettuale francese tra le due guerre, preso nel gioco spietato delle idee e delle passioni estreme entro cui si attorciglia la sua ricerca di un senso ultimo. Autobiografico romanzo della decadenza, raffinato e cinico, è la storia di un giovane che piace alle donne e ama la guerra. Di ritorno a Parigi dopo le trincee della prima guerra mondiale, egli si scontra con la morale del mondo borghese, che cerca di superare dall'interno, fino a comprendere che l'unica via d'uscita, pur nella consapevolezza della sconfitta, è la distruzione di quel mondo. Fedele alla propria figura di scrittore moralista lucido e ostinato, Drieu La Rochelle, tagliente e contradditorio, antidemocratico e suicidario, "agente doppio" romantico e reazionario, in quello che è il suo romanzo maggiore non risparmia se stesso più della propria epoca. Così "Gilles", come il suo autore, per alcuni sarà uno specchio nitidissimo, per altri deformante, mentre qualcun altro ancora, dopo averlo infranto, si taglierà con i suoi pezzi.

A novel about an egotist Casanova without morals who thinks he is morally superior; a fellow who thinks he is intellectually superior but who gives no expression to any intellectual thought. A story about a fop and a parasite who deludes himself that he is a heroic saviour. Gilles is insupportable.

I enjoyed it bc Drieu can write and managed to make me go through his six hundred pages book and not just put it aside despite its repetitive sexism (all women are ugly according to him) and the last part of the Leggi tutto
