Se la modernità è stata l'epoca delle grandi narrazioni, "Le forme elementari della vita religiosa" (1912) appartiene indubbiamente a questo tipo di opere. L'oggetto viene studiato - nell'intenzione dell'autore - in modo esaustivo a partire da un'ipotesi: la religione degli aborigeni australiani, stando all'immensa mole di ricerche condotte su di essa tra gli ultimi decenni dell'800 e gli inizi del '900, rappresenterebbe e avrebbe mantenuto nel tempo, per la semplicità dei suoi elementi costitutivi, la forma più antica di esperienza del sacro che l'umanità abbia conosciuto nella sua storia. Il legame dell'uomo con determinate specie animali e vegetali, nonché l'"entusiasmo" che i gruppi raggiungono in particolari situazioni di esaltazione collettiva, costituiscono, secondo Durkheim, il primum religioso dell'umanità su cui egli polarizza quel particolare istituto etnologico indicato come totemismo. Ora, se da un lato nella religione così concepita «c'è qualcosa di eterno», dall'altro le modalità, i meccanismi psichici e le forme religiose di rappresentazione della realtà, contengono in nuce, secondo il sociologo francese, un processo di autocostituzione e autoregolazione delle società umane che sfugge in gran parte agli individui che ne sono gli attori. E dunque il religioso rappresenterebbe il sistema generatore e fors'anche il nucleo costitutivo delle diverse dimensioni con cui si esprimono le culture umane. Da questo punto di vista, quest'opera di Durkheim può essere definita un classico delle scienze delle religioni.
