"Elizabeth è scomparsa!" è scritto sui fogli che Maud si ritrova nelle tasche, appiccicati al frigo, vicino al telefono, e per di più scritti a mano con la sua grafia. Maud sta diventando un po' smemorata e la sua presa sulla realtà a volte vacilla. Continua a comprare barattoli su barattoli di pesche sciroppate quando ne ha la dispensa piena, si dimentica di bere le tazze di tè che ha appena preparato, e scrive un sacco di appunti per ricordare a se stessa le cose. Non si dimentica però della sua amica Elizabeth, scomparsa e probabilmente in pericolo. Ma nessuno sembra darle retta, non sua figlia, non le infermiere che vengono a prendersi cura di lei, non i poliziotti, e nemmeno Peter, l'egoista figlio di Elizabeth. Maud è sospettosa, non ha la minima fiducia nelle loro rassicurazioni ed è determinata a scoprire cosa è successo. Ancora non sa che le sue smemorate ricerche stanno per condurla indietro di cinquant'anni, nell'Inghilterra dell'immediato dopoguerra, alla sua infanzia e a un mistero irrisolto che aleggia come un fantasma sulla sua famiglia: la scomparsa dell'adorata sorella maggiore Sukey. E se il mistero della scomparsa di Sukey contenesse la chiave per ritrovare Elizabeth? This novel is quite creative and an unusual mix of several genres, since while the mystery is the lead genre, you also can find humor, romance, drama, even horror, maybe on this last one, not as you can expected but certainly it has elements truly horrific and creepy. What in the hell did I just read? I feel lost, much like Maud did in this book. There's two stories going on here... I loved this! Funny and sad. So different from that sort of perspective. Really well done. Loved Maud. I knew there would be a connection between the 2 time line stories and I really liked the ending.
Did I read the same book as other reviewers?!?!?! This book was horrible, annoying, repetitive and wayyyyyy too drawn out. If you have ever wanted to understand a person with dementia and/or Alzheimer’s disease, this is the novel for you.
