Nella vulgata politicamente corretta sono merce corrente non poche conclamate falsità storiche sulla Chiesa e sul cattolicesimo. Da molti secoli - in particolare dal tempo della Riforma - versioni distorte della verità, accettate dai più come fatti indiscutibili, sono sistematicamente usate come strumenti di manipolazione. Non si tratta, spiega Rodney Stark in questo suo ultimo lavoro, di constatare l'eterno gioco delle opposte fazioni, nel cui nome le diverse vicende vengono deformate a scopo di provocazione o di polemica. Si tratta, piuttosto, di denunciare e smentire pregiudizi, inesattezze e calunnie che compongono un sapere diffuso e condiviso, sulla cui base si legge - erroneamente - la storia, si costruisce il presente e si pianifica il futuro. Con il consueto pragmatismo, l'autore smonta una dopo l'altra le «colpe» del cattolicesimo: l'antisemitismo, le crociate, l'oscurantismo che soffocò il Medioevo, l'Inquisizione, lo scontro con la scienza, l'accettazione della schiavitù, la predilezione per i regimi tirannici, l'opposizione al capitalismo e, più in generale, alla modernità. Lungi dall'essere un'opera di apologetica, l'analisi di Stark - storico protestante, legato alla Baylor University, la più grande università battista del mondo - si fonda su una scrupolosa ricerca e su un'accurata disamina delle fonti e degli eventi, e in relazione a ciascuno dei miti anticattolici più radicati mostra come la menzogna si sia inesorabilmente trasformata in verità.
