Incaricato di scegliere la location per un film di bulli e pupe, Pellam approda a Maddox, cittadina fluviale dello Stato del Missouri. Ma non fa in tempo ad ambientarsi che si ritrova per caso ad assistere a un regolamento di conti, proprio davanti al suo camper. Le vittime sono un criminale già noto alle autorità, una ragazza innocente e un poliziotto, il quale, più fortunato degli altri due, non finisce all'obitorio ma solo in ospedale. Sospettato di aver visto molto più di quanto non abbia fatto in realtà, Pellam diventa l'uomo più ricercato della Terra: dalla polizia locale che lo vuol far parlare, dall'FBI che gli vuole cavare un particolare nome, da una misteriosa bionda che lo vuole e basta, oltre che - ovviamente - dai criminali che lo vogliono eliminare per sempre. Per salvarsi, deve necessariamente trasformarsi da preda in cacciatore... Come "Sotto terra", "Fiume di sangue" contiene già tutti gli elementi che hanno reso celebre Deaver: un intrigante personaggio seriale, una trama gialla impeccabile con il famoso "meccanismo a orologeria" e un sorprendente colpo di scena finale.

I liked this one better than #1 in the series, so I’m going to finish #3 next.
I enjoyed this book as much as I can enjoy a crime thriller at this point in my literature life. I don't want to say my tastes have matured so much as they have broadened away from crime.
