Scandalosa e insieme profondamente drammatica, l’opera di Catullo – vissuto probabilmente tra l’85 e il 55 a.C. – esprime la sensibilità di una nuova generazione di poeti, i neoteroi, concentrata sull’intensa esperienza affettiva dell’individuo, ormai privo della rigorosa guida del mos maiorum. I suoi versi, che non a caso prendono le mosse dalla riproposizione dell’esperienza della lirica greca arcaica, scaturita in un mondo fatto di individualità, rifiutano istintivamente tutto ciò che offende l’essere uomo e, nel dare voce al tormentato amore per Lesbia, crudele e volubile, esprimono le insuperabili contraddizioni del sentire umano: odio e amore, eros e amicizia, disperazione e gelosia. «Nelle sue poesie – scrive Luca Canali – si riversa tutta intera la sua esperienza sofferta di vita, la sua inquietudine e profondità di affetti».

Words and expressions the translator should have thought twice about using: "Treadmill," "French poodle," "syphilitic." Catullus is the OG badass Roman poet. His polyamorous adventures and vicious satirical portraits amply flex his majorly ripped wit, status, and (professed) sexual prowess. Listen to Leggi tutto
