L'emancipazione femminile è al cuore del suo instancabile attivismo: la nomina a primo cittadino genera violente proteste culminate, durante il suo mandato, in tre tentativi di omicidio. Intanto, il cerchio talebano si stringe intorno a Vardak: Zarifa non è più al sicuro, se mai lo è stata. Il 5 novembre 2020, suo padre viene assassinato: «era un modo per fermare te», dice sua madre. Invece Zarifa, pur piegata dal dolore, non si ferma: accetta un posto al ministero della Difesa, a Kabul, ed è lì che la sorprende l'occupazione talebana della città, dopo il ritiro delle forze americane, nell'agosto 2021. Costretta a fuggire con la sua famiglia, non pensa che a tornare: nel febbraio 2022 è di nuovo in Afghanistan, inseparabile da una patria che, nonostante tutto, non smette di voler servire. Found this book interesting from a woman growing up in Afghanistan and living through the Taliban and then achieving major things until the collapse and the takeover again by the new Taliban Government. The author brings enlightenment to what woman can achieve even in harsh conditions.
