Il giovane Ilyas è poco più che un bambino quando viene rapito dalla famiglia per mano di un soldato askaro di stanza nelle colonie tedesche dell'Ostafrika. Cresce affidato a un agricoltore europeo, impara la lingua e si guadagna un'istruzione, ma la vita insieme ai colonizzatori lo allontana dal suo popolo, ne fa un forestiero a casa propria. Allo scoppio della prima guerra mondiale si arruola volontario per combattere al fianco dei tedeschi, lasciando la sorella Afiya nella casa dell'amico Khalifa. Qui la ragazza incontra il giovane Hamza, tornato dal conflitto senza un soldo e con molte cicatrici nel corpo e nell'anima: dalla loro unione nasce una speranza, un figlio chiamato Ilyas come lo zio scomparso. Ma ormai sono gli anni trenta, la guerra che sta per scuotere ancora l'Europa arriva fino alle colonie africane, e il piccolo Ilyas comincia a sentire una voce misteriosa che sembra parlare solo con lui.
