Nella cittadina svedese di Maardam, dove vive il commissario Van Veeteren, viene rinvenuto un cadavere. Si tratta di un maturo imprenditore, freddato dentro casa, con l’aggiunta di due colpi sparati all’inguine. Una modalità inquietante, utilizzata dall’assassino per un nuovo delitto, a pochi giorni dal primo. Dalle indagini emerge che entrambe le vittime, prima di morire, avevano ricevuto misteriose telefonate, in cui al silenzio seguiva una musica anni Sessanta. E appena il commissario ricompone i primi frammenti dell’intreccio avviene un terzo e identico omicidio. Parte la caccia al colpevole: occorre anticiparne le mosse, prevederne la spietata logica, capirne il movente. A poco a poco tra l’assassino e Van Veeteren si apre una partita sottile, costellata di altre morti e di scoperte sempre più sconvolgenti, e conclusa da una mossa lucida e spietata come un atto di accusa verso l’inevitabile crudeltà della vita.
