A Maardam, la cittadina svedese dove vive il commissario Van Veeteren, avviene uno strano ed efferato delitto: un maturo imprenditore viene freddato dentro casa, con l’aggiunta di due colpi sparati all’inguine. A distanza di qualche giorno, un secondo uomo viene trucidato con la stessa brutale precisione. Mentre Van Veeteren, a cui è stato affidato il caso, cerca indizi che lo aiutino a trovare la giusta pista da seguire, avviene un terzo e identico assassinio. Dalle indagini emerge un dettaglio importante: tutte e tre le vittime, prima di morire, avevano ricevuto misteriose telefonate, in cui, dopo una pausa di silenzio, s’inserivano le note di una musica anni Sessanta. A poco a poco, tra l’assassino e Van Veeteren si apre una partita sottile, costellata di altre morti e di scoperte sempre più sconvolgenti, che si concluderà con una mossa lucida e spietata, come un atto di accusa verso l’inevitabile crudeltà della vita.
