Nella città-stato di Platea, attorno al 431 a.C, il giovane guerriero Nikias si allena al combattimento in attesa del giorno in cui brucerà i lunghi capelli biondi sull'altare di Zeus e sarà ufficialmente un uomo. Ma Atene e Sparta sono sull'orlo del conflitto e Platea rischia di finire schiacciata tra le due potenze: una notte un pugno di invasori tebani riesce a violare le mura e a prendere il controllo della città. Per Nikias giunge dunque il momento fatale di scendere in battaglia, proteggere la sua famiglia, la sua donna e la sua intera stirpe. La storica invasione di Platea da parte degli spartani e la vendetta degli ateniesi, una delle battaglie più sanguinarie ed epiche della Grecia antica.
