Furono aperte vie commerciali, fondate colonie, avviata una nuova economia transatlantica, organizzate forze lavoro per produrre ed esportare lingotti d'oro, pellicce, tabacco, zucchero e manufatti. Tutto ciò rendeva vitale il controllo capillare delle popolazioni e dei territori espropriati e il pugno di ferro sulle moltitudini di diseredati impiegati nelle piantagioni, nei porti, sulle navi, nei suburbi manifatturieri. Debellare, estirpare, trucidare, sterminare, liquidare, annichilire, estinguere qualsiasi segno di rivolta: fu questa la parola d'ordine. Eppure la ribellione, come per esempio all'inizio del Settecento nella città di New York, esplose violenta a più riprese nei porti dell'Atlantico, dando vita a una nuova consapevole classe organizzata, a una moltitudine multietnica, libertaria e ribelle. Il libro racconta la storia perduta di questa classe proletaria e cosmopolita e del suo ruolo nella nascita della moderna economia globale.

I'm currently re-reading this and so far haven't encountered any of the convoluted writing or arguments that were such an impediment before. (Seems to be a common complaint).
