La capacità di rendere viva e palpabile la storia è la caratteristica di quest’opera, sia nel quadro immenso della «grande storia» – quella dei grandi imperi e dei grandi re – sia nel microcosmo della tranquilla «storia locale», dove le novità arrivano, magari in ritardo, ma arrivano e modificano la quotidianità di ogni singolo individuo.
