Rimasta orfana all'età di dieci anni a causa di un'epidemia di colera, va a vivere con uno zio, il nobile Lord Craven, in un castello nello Yorkshire. Fin dall'inizio, la vita in Inghilterra non è facile, perché lo zio ha un carattere scontroso e la governante che si occupa della ragazzina è molto severa. Con il tempo, però, Mary comincia ad ambientarsi e viene a conoscenza dei tanti segreti che la sua nuova famiglia nasconde. Scopre che lo zio è diventato così burbero da quando sua moglie è morta nel loro stupendo giardino e da allora quel giardino è chiuso a chiave. Mary riesce a trovare la chiave e a entrare nel meraviglioso giardino segreto, un luogo affascinante, da tempo abbandonato, in cui la natura ha preso il sopravvento. La attende, però, un altro mistero: sentendo un lamento, scopre che in una stanza del castello è rinchiuso un bambino... Età di lettura: da 10 anni.

I cannot believe this took me so long to read. In the spirit of A Little Princess, this story recognises the characteristics we must prize most as human beings. The book follows contrary Mary Lennox as she learns a very important lesson from a very secret garden.
