Il godimento femminile è il tema di questo Seminario. Un'assoluta novità nel campo psicoanalitico. Per Freud il godimento, comunque interdetto, si incentra tutto, per chiunque, sulla funzione fallica. Per Lacan il godimento, sebbene strutturalmente non sia permesso all'essere parlante, può essere detto tra le righe. È quel godimento di cui tutti e ognuno sanno dire qualcosa: parlare d'amore è già un godimento. L'amore infatti viene a supplire, e può arrivare a supplirvi egregiamente, al fatto che qualcosa nell'inconscio fa sì che anche quando l'uomo e la donna fanno l'amore ognuno resta dalla propria parte. Che Lacan sintetizza nell'aforisma "non c'è rapporto sessuale". Ma, colpo di scena, in questo Seminario Lacan apre un capitolo nuovo risolvendo una vecchia questione: il godimento fallico, rispetto al quale una donna si situa come non-tutta, ossia non-tutta lì, non esaurisce il godimento, poiché c'è un godimento altro, che è, rispetto al godimento fallico, supplementare. Ci sono persone che lo provano, ma che non sanno dirne nulla, come capita ad alcune donne o a dei mistici.
