Scritto nel 1901, questo dramma si pone sulla soglia del secolo come prefigurazione di tutte le audacie del teatro moderno. "Tutto può avvenire, tutto è possibile e probabile. Tempo e spazio non esistono; su base minima di realtà, l'immaginazione disegna nuovi motivi: un misto di ricordi, esperienze, invenzioni, assurdità e improvvisazioni". Così scriveva Strindberg presentando Il sogno. In effetti anche il lettore di oggi rimane stupefatto davanti alla naturalezza con cui Strindberg scavalca tutte le convenzioni teatrali del tempo per addentrarsi in una nuova regione, in una nuova forma, che si potrebbe definire "teatro psichico".
