Nei diciassette anni compresi tra il 1981 e il 1998 Michael Roach lavora presso la Andin International Diamond Corporation, un'azienda avviata con un prestito di cinquantamila dollari e qualche dipendente. Nello stesso periodo Roach conduce una doppia vita: dopo la laurea a Princeton ha intrapreso un percorso di conoscenza dell'antica saggezza tibetana, che culmina dopo vent'anni, nel 1995, quando è il primo americano a meritare il titolo di "Geshe", ossia maestro di insegnamenti buddisti. È il suo maestro a incoraggiarlo a trovare un impiego in un'indaffarata azienda americana, per mettere alla prova nel mondo reale gli antichi principi. Roach sceglie il settore dei diamanti e inizia la gavetta presso la Andin International, come fattorino. In questo volume racconta come ha messo in piedi la Divisione Diamanti della compagnia, come ne è diventato vicepresidente illustrando i principi cui si è ispirato. In primo luogo bisogna fare soldi, ma in maniera pulita. In questo modo il successo è compatibile con la vita spirituale, anzi ne diventa parte integrante. In secondo luogo l'attività di creare ricchezza non deve esaurire il corpo e la mente: un uomo d'affari che si rovina la salute con il lavoro vanifica lo scopo stesso del suo lavoro. Il terzo principio è che, alla fine della vita lavorativa, occorre poter riconoscere che nel lavoro e nella vita ci si è comportati in un modo significativo, che ha lasciato un buon segno nel mondo.

A DIFFICULT BOOK TO RECOMMEND, but despite the flaws, it is worth reading. Some of the ideas are excellent, Roach is scholarly and has a real gift for teaching, but I think some of his views, like Roach himself, are controversial. Two stars is being generous. I skimmed the last 2/3 of the book. I do appreciate the reminder that we create our karma through our thoughts, words, and actions. And our thoughts are most important.
