Lloyd, trent’anni e un diploma tecnico mai sfruttato, è un tifoso degli Hibs, la squadra di calcio che si divide con gli Hearts la tifoseria di Edimburgo. Qualche volta, ma senza nemmeno troppo entusiasmo, partecipa a raid violenti negli stadi, sempre che non lo assorbano troppo le passioni supreme della sua vita: l’ecstasy, i trip e, in mancanza d’altro, il metadone, magari corroborato da una pinta di birra. Durante un rave party, però, incontra Heather, una giovane donna in fuga da un matrimonio convenzionale, e con lei inizia un’evasione all’insegna delle droghe socializzanti, che li porta inaspettatamente lontano... quasi ai confini dell’amore. Nella seconda di queste tre avventure «chimiche» Samantha, nata senza braccia a causa di un farmaco devastante preso dalla madre in gravidanza, rintraccia i responsabili dell’industria farmaceutica che aveva impunemente messo in commercio il prodotto. Il terzo «romanzo breve» ci porta invece nella Londra upper class, tra le cliniche di lusso e la casa di una famosa scrittrice di romanzi rosa che, scoprendosi tradita, trama nei confronti del marito una spietata vendetta. Spostandosi secondo una tecnica cinematografica per scorci rapidi e fulminei dalle periferie più squallide ai palazzi più rispettabili, l’occhio narrativo di Welsh compone un quadro irriverente e straziato della realtà, confermando l’autore come l’indiscusso capofila della chemical generation.

'Ecstasy' (or 'Ecstasy: 3 Tales of Chemical Romance') is a book comprised of three short stories all centring around love/sex/relationships/romance whilst high on Ecstasy. Dirty, disgusting, and disturbingly amusing.
By far, the most twisted book I've ever read.
Three stories - the first two of which were brilliant, the last a bit long and pointless though not without charm - which properly illustrate Welsh at his best. Witty, shocking, touching in places.. I'd heard this collection of "three tales of chemical imbalance" weren't so good, so it was a pleasant surprise to find myself quite enjoying them all.
