Martin Eden (1909) è stato definito uno dei «libri arrabbiati della letteratura americana». Nella vicenda del protagonista, giovane marinaio che si scopre scrittore e si autodistrugge una volta raggiunto il successo per protesta contro una fama in cui non si riconosce, si rispecchia la vita tormentata dell’autore, la sua difesa di una personale via alla narrativa in polemica con il professionismo letterario dell’epoca. L’intensa fabula dell’apprendistato di London e della sua disperata, rabbiosa e ambigua volontà di emergere trascende però i modi dell’autobiografismo per farsi straziante radiografia delle contraddizioni della società americana di fine secolo: una società materialista, nata da un grandioso sforzo pionieristico, tesa alla conquista dei beni del mondo, che l’autore osserva prima dal basso, con l’ansia del diseredato in cerca di riscatto, poi col disincanto di chi ne rifiuta la spietata logica di consumo che macina profitti, mercifica persino la poesia e sacrifica vite reali.
