Scritto e pubblicato nel 1909, all’età di trentatré anni, Martin Eden, forse il romanzo più importante di Jack London, è al contempo la storia della gioventù dello scrittore e l’invenzione di un personaggio dietro cui si cela l’autore stesso, intenzionato, con tale finzione letteraria, a scrivere un’autobiografia celebrativa e distruttiva. Non a caso, quel mare californiano, cui guardava con infinita malinconia e ansia di ribellione, fa da sfondo alla vicenda di un rozzo marinaio, Martin Eden. Questi riesce a entrare nella ricca famiglia di Arturo, un giovane al quale ha salvato la vita, inserendosi poco a poco in un ambiente completamente diverso dal suo per cultura e per educazione. Martin diverrà scrittore, ma sceglierà di fuggire, e in modo definitivo, dal mondo civile e dalle sue convenzioni, cercando l’autenticità perduta.
