«David ha i fiori nei capelli. È delicato e gentile, proprio come i suoi petali colorati.» David e il suo migliore amico sono inseparabili e insieme si divertono moltissimo inventando canzoni, saltando nelle pozzanghere e scappando dalle api che ronzano tra i suoi fiori. Ma un giorno succede qualcosa di strano: un petalo si stacca dalla testa di David e rimane tra le dita del suo amico. Da quel momento, David non vuole più giocare, diventa triste e silenzioso. E una mattina, quando David arriva in classe e si toglie il berretto, tutti i suoi petali volano via come farfalle, lasciando solo rametti secchi. Gli altri bambini gli stanno lontani, per paura di pungersi, ma non il suo amico del cuore. Lui vuole restituire a David tutti i suoi colori. Così ha un'idea. Ritaglia tanti fiori colorati da attaccare sulla testa di David. La paura sembra svanita: adesso anche tutti gli altri bambini vogliono preparare un fiore. Ora David è tornato come prima. Beh, non proprio... quasi. Ma può ricominciare a sorridere e giocare. Un giorno, spunta un fiore nuovo tra i capelli di David. Non uno di carta. Un fiore vero, bellissimo. E poi un altro e un altro ancora. Le api tornano a ronzargli tra i capelli. Il suo amico, però, continua a realizzare fiori di carta per lui: «Casomai ne avesse di nuovo bisogno. Ne ho una scatola piena. Per sicurezza. Perché David è il mio migliore amico. E io il suo». Capita a tutti, anche ai bambini, di attraversare un periodo difficile, di sentirsi fragili, di perdere qualcosa o qualcuno di importante, di ammalarsi. Il bambino con i fiori nei capelli è una metafora potentissima di questa fragilità. E di quel piccolo miracolo chiamato amicizia, che ci fa ritrovare la luce anche nel buio più nero.
