Uno sceneggiatore si ritira insieme alla moglie attrice e alla figlia di quattro anni in una casa isolata tra le montagne per scrivere il seguito del suo film di maggior successo. Il paesaggio è da cartolina: il minuscolo paese in fondo alla valle, la strada stretta e piena di tornanti, i ghiacciai quasi azzurri nell'aria frizzante di dicembre. Ma l'idillio è solo apparente. Mentre la moglie manda sms e la figlia fantastica nel suo mondo di bambina, la casa si trasforma in un puzzle di Escher a cui manca l'ultimo pezzo. Fra strani rumori improvvisi, oggetti che spariscono, vetri di finestre che non riflettono più la sua immagine, al narratore resta solo la scrittura per mantenere il contatto con la realtà. Però nulla è come sembra, e gli elementi classici del racconto dell'orrore si ricompongono in un gioco raffinato tra le percezioni del protagonista e la fantasia del lettore. L'orrore è davvero nella casa o all'interno delle relazioni personali?
