Ispirato a un evento realmente accaduto, scritto in una lingua prensile e cinematografica e basato su una profonda conoscenza della materia narrativa, "L'ultima scommessa di Billy Phelan", inedito in Italia, è forse il romanzo più perfetto di quel «ciclo di Albany» al quale è legata la fama di William Kennedy: un ritratto dell'America della Grande Depressione, tra gangsterismo e intrighi politici, che non ha nulla da invidiare ai capolavori del noir.

More mystical and seedier than the first book in the series but much less violent. It had some great moments but overall was not as engaging as Legs was. The best part of this one is the names! As the pages went by I kept thinking this is a book that Scott Fitzgerald might have written if he'd grown up on the dole in upstate New York instead of traipsing around Princeton in his matched sweaters and scarves (just having a little fun, Francis). The dual narrative is kind of clunky, mainly because of how much more interesting the Billy Phelan story is than the somewhat muddled father-son issues of Martin Daugherty.
