Kathleen Middleton, o Miss Middleton per quasi tutti quelli che la conoscono, insegna pianoforte e danza classica in un'anonima casa a schiera nella periferia a nord di Londra. La sua intera vita, fin da bambina, è scandita da singolari premonizioni che ne guidano la direzione. Accade anche la mattina del 21 ottobre 1966, quando si sveglia con il respiro bloccato in gola e un terribile presentimento. Un'ora più tardi, una valanga di detriti di una miniera di carbone precipita sul villaggio di Aberfan, nel Galles meridionale, travolgendo gli edifici e uccidendo 144 persone, fra cui molti bambini. Tra i medici e i soccorritori accorsi sul posto c'è anche John Barker, uno psichiatra poco più che quarantenne, con un vivo interesse per le condizioni mentali fuori dell'ordinario e membro della British Society for Psychical Research. Parlando con i testimoni e di fronte a «diversi incidenti strani e toccanti» connessi al disastro, Barker ha presto la sensazione di trovarsi davanti a qualcosa di portentoso. La rete di informatori che Barker richiama intorno a sé è inaspettatamente numerosa, da impiegati di banca a maestri di ballo. Centinaia di persone le cui visioni sono spaventosamente accurate. Tra questi, anche due «osservatori» in grado di predire con incredibile precisione incidenti di varia natura e omicidi, fino alla premonizione più inquietante: che Barker stesso di lì a poco sarebbe deceduto. I'm not sure this non-fiction book is really about what the title suggests it is: The Premonitions Bureau. I suspect that just made a good title, or that it was going to be about that but Knight got distracted, or there simply wasn't enough content. I guess my expectations were too high, given that both the author and editors are affiliated with the New Yorker. This was a chaotic mix of events that at times didn’t seem to be in the right place in the book. I kept wanting to see the outline to help me figure out the organization.
