Nel 1956 lo scrittore Gavin Maxwell, durante un viaggio in Iraq, incontrò un irresistibile cucciolo di lontra. Fu amore a prima vista e, da quel momento, i due furono inseparabili. Tornato in patria, Maxwell si trasferì con il piccolo Mij sulla costa scozzese, in un vecchio cottage da lui ribattezzato Camusfeàrna. In quella ruvida, incontaminata e spettacolare natura, tra boschi abitati da magnifici cervi, spiagge frequentate soltanto dai gabbiani e un mare indomabile, Maxwell trovò non solo il luogo ideale per il suo amico, ma un'opportunità per vivere lontano da una "civiltà" urbana che ormai non tollerava più. In una condizione di solitudine pressoché totale, Maxwell dedicò a Mij e alle lontre che seguirono negli anni un amore, un'attenzione e una cura speciali, ricevendo in cambio un affetto infinito da parte di questi animali curiosi, intraprendenti e giocherelloni. L'uomo, che in passato aveva praticato con passione la caccia, si trasformò in un amante devoto della natura, rispettoso di ogni forma di vita, oltre che in un acuto osservatore del comportamento animale. In queste pagine Maxwell racconta le peripezie tragicomiche della sua convivenza con le lontre, in un crescendo di amore e tenerezz che chiunque abbia avuto la fortuna di avere accanto a sé un animale domestico ben conosce.

I wanted to read this after having a go at Miriam Darlington’s Otter Country, which in many ways revolved around this book and the landscape described by Gavin Maxwell. He got much closer to the animals than Darlington, so perhaps it’s not surprising that his account is more interesting and vital. O Leggi tutto

Gavin Maxwell is a dark and complex figure. That he loved the natural world is obvious in his writing, that his relationship with it was appropriative and at times abusive is also true.
