A Kalaw, una tranquilla città annidata tra le montagne birmane, vi è una piccola casa da tè dall'aspetto modesto, che un ricco viaggiatore occidentale non esiterebbe a giudicare miserabile. Il caldo poi è soffocante, così come gli sguardi degli avventori che scrutano ogni volto a loro poco familiare con fare indagatorio. Julia Win, giovane newyorchese appena sbarcata a Kalaw, se ne tornerebbe volentieri in America, se un compito ineludibile non la trattenesse lì, in quella piccola sala da tè birmana. Suo padre è scomparso. La polizia ha fatto le sue indagini e tratto le sue conclusioni. Tin Win, arrivato negli Stati Uniti dalla Birmania con un visto concesso per motivi di studio nel 1942, diventato cittadino americano nel 1959 e poi avvocato newyorchese di grido... un uomo sicuramente dalla doppia vita se le sue tracce si perdono nella capitale del vizio, a Bangkok. L'atroce sospetto che una simile ricostruzione della vita di suo padre potesse in qualche modo corrispondere al vero si è fatto strada nella mente e nel cuore di Julia fino al giorno in cui sua madre, riordinando la soffitta, non ha trovato una lettera di suo padre. La lettera era indirizzata a una certa Mi Mi residente a Kalaw, in Birmania, e cominciava con queste struggenti parole: "Mia amata Mi Mi, sono passati cinquemilaottocentosessantaquattro giorni da quando ho sentito battere il tuo cuore per l'ultima volta".
