Ben prima dell'avvento della produzione con le macchine nel 1780, imprenditori europei e potenti uomini politici ridisegnarono l'industria manifatturiera mondiale, la cui espansione imperialista poggiava sullo sfruttamento inumano degli schiavi nelle piantagioni e degli operai nelle fabbriche. In apparenza, il volume si propone come una storia, dalle origini ai giorni nostri, del prodotto più importante del XVIII e del XIX secolo: la sua produzione, trasformazione, circolazione. In realtà, attraverso il prisma del cotone, è del capitalismo industriale che Sven Beckert vuole tracciare la storia globale, nelle sue dimensioni e componenti fondamentali, non solo economiche e tecnologiche, ma anche sociali, giuridiche, politiche. E il cotone può legittimamente assurgere al ruolo di prisma, poiché è proprio a partire da esso che il capitalismo industriale è nato. Beckert definisce "capitalismo di guerra" l'insieme dei processi di insediamento imperialista, conquista coloniale, espropriazione della terra, sfruttamento intensivo di forza lavoro schiavistica, che consentiranno al Regno Unito di controllare, già nei primi decenni del XIX secolo, il mercato mondiale del cotone.

A fascinating subject and I learnt a lot. The author has backed his sources with a huge 140 pages of footnotes. The text itself is "only" 448 pages. Coming in I could not wait to start but in the end found myself happy to end. In my opinion as informative as this book is the author is not that good
