A Nagoya abitano cinque ragazzi, tre maschi e due femmine, che tra i sedici e i vent'anni vivono la più perfetta e pura delle amicizie. Almeno fino al secondo anno di università, quando uno di loro, Tazaki Tsukuru, riceve una telefonata dagli altri: non deve più cercarli. Da quel giorno, senza nessuna spiegazione, non li vedrà mai più: non ci saranno mai più ore e ore passate a parlare di tutto e a confidarsi ogni cosa, mai più pomeriggi ad ascoltare la splendida Shiro suonare Liszt, mai più Tsukuru avrà qualcuno di cui potersi fidare. Il dolore è cosi lacerante che nel cuore del ragazzo si spalanca un abisso che solo il desiderio di morire è in grado di colmare. Dopo sei mesi trascorsi praticamente senza mangiare né uscire di casa, nelle tenebre di un'infelicità senza desideri, Tzukuru torna faticosamente alla vita ma scopre di essere cambiato. Non solo nel fisico - più magro, dai lineamenti più duri e taglienti - ma anche, soprattutto, nell'animo. Ancora oggi, quando ormai ha trentasei anni, continua a vivere con l'ombra di quel rifiuto che lo accompagna sempre, come una musica che resta sospesa nell'aria anche quando non c'è più nessuno a suonarla. L'incontro con Sara, che intuisce l'inquietudine nascosta dietro l'apparente ordinarietà di Tsukuru, sarà l'occasione per rispondere a quelle domande che per sedici anni l'hanno ossessionato ma che non ha mai avuto il coraggio di affrontare.
